Steve Parish was appointed as Mayor of the Town of Ajax in December 1995. He is the longest serving Mayor in the Town’s history, having been re-elected to the position in each of the Municipal Elections, from 1997 to 2014.
Mr. Parish was first elected to Ajax Town Council in 1980 and held a number of positions thereafter, including: Councillor, Ward 2 (1980 to 1982), Councillor, Ward 3 (1992 to 1994) and Regional Councillor (1994 to 1995).
Mr. Parish is a member of Durham Regional Council and the Durham Region Planning & Economic Development Committee. He is a founding Board member of Veridian Corporation and has served as Vice Chairman.
Mr. Parish has been an outspoken advocate for the environment and sustainable development. In 2000, he championed the adoption of an environment first Official Plan by the Town of Ajax. He is a proponent of the Province of Ontario’s Greenbelt initiative, and successfully advocated that all of the Town’s non-urban lands be placed in the Greenbelt. He presently serves as Co-chair of Municipal Leaders for the Greenbelt.
Mr. Parish has lived in Ajax all his life. His father, Bill Parish, was a member of the Town’s first Council, and subsequently served as Mayor from 1958 to 1963. A graduate of Ajax High School, he holds a BA in history from York University and an LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1978. Mr. Parish retired from actively practicing law in September 2006.
